I haven’t played in like 2 years, but I saw that there was a recent beta. I also have gone on a couple of times in the last week and there are 0 other players. Basically, what happened?

Player retention issues, caused by an inflammation from YouTubers and a system that was unfriendly to newer players. Slowly, over a couple years a majority of the community left. The ones left over have been promised a better system, change, and ultimately advertising. Beta released, and that sums it up.

Currently the server isn't really a thing. High majority of the members left are only here to be a part of the community and that's that. Project Mayhem moved away from being a Minecraft tied community to just a community tied against memories. As well, contrary to the popular belief, the server died due to lack of interest of the gamemode itself and not just lack of advertising (people stopped enjoying games that required grind, that's also why the mmo scene has died off). Advertising would have only given the server a brief amount of time of renewal then gone back to what it was (just like it did every other time with the added corrosion of loyal members). In other words, Infected as a whole is an old game type. People lost interest due to no new content and complained when new content came because people believed their interest in the game was tied to the original state of the server when in reality, it was tied to the work and loyalty presented.
